Career Transition - Going Back to School

Most of us will have at least one career transition during our working lives and sometimes this will involve making a major change.

One of the most common major changes involves going back to college or university to train in a completely new field

As with any career change, the first step is to determine exactly what you want to do. Start out be assessing your skills and what you actually enjoy doing. Why do you want to move from your present career? What don't you like about it and what do you want to do instead?

Once you've come up with some possible alternatives, you should do plenty of background research into the careers which interest you .

Going back to college is a major commitment both in terms of time and money and it will also have an impact on your relationships. You will need to look at the qualifications required for the career, which ones you are likely to be able to gain and the most suitable ways for you to study.

If, for example, your goal is to study medicine and you failed science at school, you will have a lot of extra steps to catch up on, if you are to be accepted into medical school. You could gain the initial qualifications by attending night school, private tuition or distance learning. But you need to be aware that this is a highly competitive field and the qualifications may be beyond your reach. In this case you need to look at alternative careers in healthcare.

If you are confident that you can make the grade in your chosen profession, you have to look at the length of training and the mode of delivery best suited to you. Have you enough savings to support yourself and any dependents if you go back to college full time? Or will you need to work part-time or even full time while you study?

Is it possible to follow a distance learning course, by correspondence, email and internet? Or does your new career require practical hands-on training?

Can you work part-time in your current job or will you need to look for shorter hours elsewhere?

Is it a long time since you last studied and are you confident to get back into the swing of things? If you are concerned about going back to study, you could consider taking a short course first or enrolling on a course in how to study.

Going back to college is challenging but well worth it if you end up in the career you really want.
